We are all moms here. So how many of you have seen Disney Pixar’s Inside Out? If you haven’t, I highly recommend it. It’s a great movie about emotions and feelings, and let me tell you a secret, I (a grown adult) learned something from that movie.
I had a realization while watching it other say, and I feel like now, more than ever, everyone needs to hear it: It’s perfectly okay to be sad.
I can’t tell you how many times a day right now I read about the silver linings, and staying positive. Which, don’t get me wrong, are important things. It’s also important to let yourself feel sad.
You’re allowed to feel sad for your kids who can’t celebrate their birthday with family. You’re allowed to feel sad that your teenager won’t get their senior prom or high school graduation. It’s okay if you’re sad that you can’t go sit with a friend in your favorite coffee shop. It’s okay if you’re sad that the concert you were looking forward to got canceled. The list goes on.
You are perfectly fine to feel ALL the emotions: Sadness, Anger, Fear, Disgust, and Joy. Because guess what? You NEED to feel all your emotions in order to find joy.
There is a lot to feel positive about, for sure. There is a lot we can still smile and laugh about. There is still a whole lot of good in the world! (Just ask John Krasinski!) However, let yourself feel the sadness too.
So, if there is one thing we can learn from Inside Out, it’s that you NEED to feel sad in order to find joy. You need all of your emotions in order to properly function and not break down. Don’t push them deep down because the internet told you to stay positive today. Cry if you want to. You’ve got the time and space to do it, so let it out mama. Then when you’re done, find that joy and start a new day.
