I seem to always have a huge pile of fabric scraps filling up my plastic binds, so I am always looking for creative ways to use up my scraps (usually to make room for more scraps). This project is the perfect solution for this ever growing scrappy problem. If you are a beginning sewer this project is a great starting project and perfect for quick Valentine’s Day decorations.
Here is what you will need:
-blank canvas (any size depending on how big you want your heart to be)
-scrap fabric (again depending on how big you want your heart to be)
-plain fabric to cover the canvas + 2 inches all around (I used a beige linen but you can use anything you like, even lace would be cute)
-heart template (I made mine out of cardboard, freehand. It doesn’t have to be perfect)
-hot glue gun
1. Begin by cutting all your scraps into strips about 1.5″ wide. I stacked all my scraps on top of each other and cut them all at once to save time.
Line up all the strips, I placed the shortest strips at the bottom of the heart.
2. Sew each strip together horizontally (they will be stacked horizontally on top of each other).
3. Iron the strips flat.
4. Using your template cut out your heart. I actually just made half a heart and folded my fabric in half vertically, then cut out the heart shape.
5. Place your heart on your background fabric (make sure it is centered).
Pin the heart to your background fabric and sew around the edges leaving 1/4″ edge. (If you don’t like the frayed edges you can fold it under or use a zig zag stitch.)
6. Wrap your fabric heart around your canvas pulling it tight and gluing the fabric to the backside of the canvas.
Display your heart proudly, you did a great job!
Love this cute idea! For nannies to do with their children and give it to the parents!
