When Was The Last Time You Thanked A Teacher?

I have two kids that are currently in school.  One in second grade and one in kindergarten.  This means that I have had the opportunity to attend many field trips.  Let me tell you, it is one of the quickest ways to gain appreciation for a teacher.  Most recently I attended my son’s kindergarten field trip to a farm.  I was given six kids that I was supposed to watch over and keep track of.  After only a few hours I was exhausted, I can’t imagine doing this full time.  As the day went on it was harder and harder to keep their attention, to keep them from running away from me. Now I know a field trip situation is a little different.  They aren’t in their normal environment, they are excited for the adventure they are about to embark on.  But I feel like it does give a pretty accurate portrayal of what a teacher goes through on a day to day basis.

Although I have only experienced elementary age children, I know every teacher is amazing and has to have a lot of patience.  Not only are they teaching our children basic fundamentals that they will need to succeed, they are also molding them into great members of society.  They spend hours inside and outside of the classroom preparing materials, lesson plans and making sure that their students are getting something from every day that they are in their class.   In some ways a teacher can become like family, because they spend so much time with your children.

This is why it is so important to take the time to thank a teacher.  Yes, I know there is always teacher appreciation day, or week.  Yes, these are important times when we should most definitely spoil teachers.  But I think its important as well, to remember how much sacrifice and love goes into being a teacher.  To remember how much they are truly doing for our kids, and society as a whole.  I know it’s easy to get caught up in our own every day activities as we drop our kids off and go about trying to get as much done as we can before we pick them up.  So this is my reminder for you. When was the last time you thanked a teacher? In my opinion it should be done more frequently than the typical teacher appreciation week.
