Tasty Traditions for Christmas Morning Breakfast

Tasty Traditions for Christmas Morning Breakfast - Christmas morning is all about memories, family, traditions - and of course the food! Here's our favorite breakfast traditions for Christmas morning.

For most of us, Christmas morning is all about memories, family and traditions! I’ve talked about family traditions for Christmas before, but today we are talking all about the FOOD to make your morning merry.  In our house the morning starts with stockings, gifts being ripped open and wrapping paper strewn about the room,  then we finish up with breakfast all together as a family. In all honesty, there’s nothing I could make for breakfast that would get my kids to want to eat before exchanging gifts.

There are two dishes that I make every Christmas morning and I love that I can prep them ahead and just throw them in the oven in the morning. This year I am thinking about making some scones or muffins the day before, so we have something to snack on while we open gifts – the last thing I want is a hangry toddler first thing on Christmas.

There are so many different traditions when it comes to breakfast on Christmas morning, they range from hands on, to prep ahead and from simple to fancy. I surveyed our EVMB writing team to find out what they eat with their families, plus a few more yummy ideas that would be fun to incorporate.

Cinnamon Rolls

By far the most popular tradition for Christmas morning breakfast is cinnamon rolls. Both Heather and Lisa on our EVMB team like get take and bake cinnamon rolls from a local bakery, then bake and frost them Christmas morning. Rise Up Bakery in Gilbert is a favorite.

Our writers, Abby and Cara, whip up cinnamon rolls from scratch at home on Christmas Eve, then bake them Christmas morning. Here’s a few of our absolute favorite cinnamon roll recipes:

Overnight Cinnamon Rolls from Lovely Little Kitchen

The Best Homemade Cinnamon Rolls from Six Sisters Stuff

Overnight Cinnamon Rolls from Sally’s Baking Addiction

Quick and Easy Cinnamon Rolls from Handle The Heat

Monkey Bread

Next up is the second cousin to cinnamon rolls – Monkey Bread! This is one of the most popular Christmas morning breakfast traditions. Our writer Kim preps this ahead the night before, then bakes it Christmas morning. Here’s some of our favorite recipes:

Granny’s Monkey Bread from Self Proclaimed Foodie

Slow Cooker Monkey Bread from Crazy for Crust

Homemade Monkey Bread from Sally’s Baking Addiction

Breakfast Casseroles

I love breakfast casseroles for holidays like Christmas – generally everyone likes them and they are easy to throw together with minimal effort. I like to pair an egg based casserole with something sweet (like cinnamon rolls or monkey bread) to round out the meal a bit. They also can usually be prepped the night before then put into the oven to bake in the morning.

EVMB writer Kelsey does breakfast pizza with her family and Heather makes a Baked Western Omelet! Every year I make an egg casserole (similar to the Amish Breakfast Casserole linked below but with sausage ) and overnight French toast (similar to the recipe below) if we have family coming to join us for brunch on Christmas. Here’s a few sweet and savory casseroles, stratas, quiches, and frittatas to get you started:

Bacon Breakfast pizza from Lil Luna

Baked Western Omelet from The Seasoned Mom

Amish Breakfast Casserole from All Recipes

Overnight French Toast Casserole from Ezra Pound Cake

Baked Oatmeal with Blueberries and Bananas from SkinnyTaste

Overnight Ham and Cheese Strata from Sally’s Baking Addiction

Pastries & Muffins

After last year I learned that waiting to eat until all of the gifts have been opened before your toddler eats breakfast can be a little frightening. Having something like muffins, scones or bread out and ready first thing can be the perfect way to hold over everyone’s hunger until breakfast is ready. I haven’t quite decided which of these I’m going to make this year (and hopefully add it to our tradition!), but here’s what I’m considering:

Triple Vanilla Scones from Everyday Annie

Gingerbread Doughnut Muffins from Everyday Annie

Old Fashioned Sour Cream Doughnuts from Handle The Heat

Cranberry Orange Scones from Sally’s Baking Addiction

Spiced Gingerbread Loaf from Sally’s Baking Addiction

Classic Eggs & Bacon Style Breakfast

This may seem like a no-brainer, but making a big classic breakfast is the way lots of families do Christmas morning. EVMB writer Kayla says her in-laws do a big spread with bacon, sausage, eggs, and crepes (yum!). I think something like pancakes or waffles would be another good thing to incorporate (or even these gingerbread waffles!)

Beverages

Ok so this isn’t exactly breakfast, but really a complement to breakfast that can very much be a part of the Christmas morning tradition too – a must for two of the girls on our EVMB team. Teena says they do a mimosa bar on Christmas morning – something like this one. And Kelsey says they always have bloody Mary’s with breakfast in their house. And in our house I start a big batch of my Mulled Apple Cider in the slow cooker first thing in the morning so it’s hot and ready when anyone wants a mug – plus it makes the house smell divine! We can’t forget about hot chocolate too!

Does your family have any Christmas morning breakfast traditions? We’d love to hear what kinds of food start your morning off merry!
