Where to go for baby's first haircut in Arizona

The timing for this milestone varies widely – some babies are ready for it at eight months and others can hold out until they’re 2 or older. But whenever it happens, your baby’s first hair cut can be a nerve-wracking experience – for child and parent!

Giving your child a positive first experience can help set the tone for future haircuts, so take the time to do it right. Here are a few tips for a less stressful first time.

Just go for the bangs.

Does your baby really need a full haircut, or is it just that some of those gorgeous locks keep falling into his eyes? A few quick snips at home can solve the problem and allow you to put off the first real haircut until your baby is older. If your little one has curls, be aware that they may go away once you cut them off – so it may be worth putting it off for as long as possible for that reason alone!

Give it a trial run.

Get a pair of fake scissors (many Play-Doh kits include a pair), and play a game of pretend. Go through each step of the process. Ask your child to sit in an adult-sized chair, drape her with a sheet to mimic the plastic cape, and then walk her through the process. This gives her the opportunity to get comfortable with the process, and it gives you an opportunity to identify any steps that will make her nervous.

Choose the right hair salon.

Look for one that focuses on families or children. Do they have toys, books, and videos to keep kids’ attention? Some even have fun seats for your child to sit on, for example, that are shaped like a horse, car, or airplane.

You don’t want someone who doesn’t have experience dealing with squirmy little customers during your first go. If cost is a factor, be on the lookout for coupons and deals before you select a salon.

Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids is a kid-centric salon, but you will pay for the kid-centric first haircut package, be prepared.

Snip-Its in Chandler is another kid-centric salon. More importantly, Snip-its stylists, in conjunction with Autism Speaks®, receive special training to meet the needs of children with autism. They were one of the first to provide this unique training for our stylists so coming to Snip-its is a positive experience for children with autism.

Other contributors recommend going to your own salon where you know the stylist and are sure they’ll be patient with your baby.

Visit the hair salon before the big day.

Go when the person who will be cutting your child’s hair is there. Introduce your child to him or her. Let your child explore the environment and watch someone else (or even you!) get a haircut. This is particularly important if your child gets nervous in new places or with new people.

Buy a new, awesome toy.

And don’t let your child see it until the big day. That way, he has something interesting to keep his little hands occupied while the hair cut is going on. It can also serve as a great mental distraction to keep them from becoming too upset and thrashing about, which nobody wants.

Bring his lovey.

If your baby is attached to a particular stuffed toy or blanket, take it along for the big event. It will be a comfort if she starts to get nervous.

Ensure your child is well-rested.

We all know that a baby who’s sleepy is a baby who’s cranky. Don’t do anything to upset the normal routine before the haircut. If your child simply decides this is the day to be difficult about napping or get up 30 minutes earlier than usual, call, apologize, and reschedule with your hair salon. If they deal with kids on a regular basis, they’ll understand.

Bring a plastic bag.

How does this help? Well, it doesn’t exactly, but it does provide you with a way to save a lock of their hair! You don’t want to miss the opportunity to have a keepsake to remember your baby’s first hair cut by.

When it’s time for the big day, relax.

You’ve done the prep work, so don’t over-worry. Otherwise, your child will pick up on your apprehension and start to worry, too. If you’re bringing your little one to a child-friendly salon, the staff members there are experts at handling first haircuts, so while it may be your baby’s first time (and yours!), rest assured you’re in more experienced hands.
