Fall break is right around the corner and I am so excited to share with you my family’s outdoor fall bucket list items. The cooler weather makes it easier to enjoy all the wonderful outdoors activities we love to do here in Arizona.

Go kayaking or paddle boarding on the lake. Cooler weather in town means being able to enjoy the lakes closer to us. Canyon or Saguaro lakes and even the Salt River Basin is a lot closer to the East Valley compared to Roosevelt, Mormon or Woods Canyon lakes. Renting a kayak and or paddle board for a day isn’t outrageously priced and is a great cardio exercise.

Ride your bike along the canals. Download canal maps to map out routes. We like trying new routes that will take us to different places around town. I specially love the canal that runs from Warner road and ends by the airport on Cooper & Germann. Bike rides along the canal seems safer for my kids because of the wider paths and non existent cars driving by. You might even spot a few animals along the way (ducks, dogs, birds, fish, turtles…) so be on the lookout for sure.

Attend the fall festival at Slide Rock or not. This is a further drive, but I think a visit to Slide Rock state park in Sedona is always nice. They have activities going on during the festival (Oct. 8) but my kids just love going there to pick apples, eat ice-cream and explore alongside Slide Rock. Sometimes the water is still warm enough that the kids can swim so be prepared and bring a towel and a change of clothes with you!

Pack a picnic and head out to a local park. Walk around the just play at the park. Then end it with a big blanket under a shady spot and enjoy the picnic meal together.

Go camping. There are plenty of places you and your family can go to. You can stay close to town or somewhere secluded. Check out my camping spot recommendations here.

Go on a hike. There are so many cool hikes you and your family can explore here. Find a new hike on my list of family hikes here or re-connect with a trail you already love.

Host an BBQ with an outdoor movie night. Potluck style it! You provided the meats and everyone else can bring the sides, dessert and paper goods. Find a friend with a projector, rent an oldie but goodie movie from your local library for free.

Go camping in your backyard, patio or living room. No time for an away camping trip? Set-up the tent in the back yard, back patio or if nothing else in the living room. just don’t forget the bug spray and smore’s

Visit a working farm or volunteer at one. Check with local farms (Schnepf, Vertuccio, Mother Nature, Superstitions springs, Desert roots, Agritopia, and there are many more out there)

Visit and walk around a small town. Small town has it’s charms and for the most part relies on people like us to visit. I would suggest Prescott, Jerome, Greer, Strawberry, Pine, Payson, Cottonwood and even Yuma. Check out the historical sites and shop small.

Visit and walk around a small town.

Go on a Ranger guided flashlight tour at a state park.

Do yard work. Let the kids mow the lawn, remove dead plants and plant new plants. Rake, gather and pile leaves. Lastly let em try the hose water when they get thirsty!

Build a Campfire. Better yet go CAMPING!

Roast hotdogs and eats smore’s by the bonfire.

Go old school and play kick the can or hopscotch with a group of friends.

Host a family bake sale for a charity. I love to look for local small charities to support.

Have a backyard nerf gun party with the family.

Do tai chi or  yoga at the park. It’s ok, I won’t judge in-fact text me and I will join you!

Lastly, go fishing! with so many urban lakes and lakes that surrounds us fishing can be doe by everyone and anyone. Adult and kids 10 yrs and older needs a license to fish.

I hope you make it a great day!

xoxo,

Roe
