Happy New Year! I love the start of a new year, don’t you? I always do a major cleaning and purging of all things that I no longer use or have gone bad. It’s my way of resetting and starting new! I always start with my skincare and makeup. As moms we do a really good job of making sure that our kiddos always use safe and sanitized products, but what about us? It’s a new year so new makeup for you!
Last week I had a great conversation with one of our clients. She’s been noticing an increase in clogged pores and breakouts. As I start asking her some fact finding questions, she told me that she never washes her makeup brushes and she’s had the same foundation for over a year. There it is! The main culprit of her clogged pores and breakouts, bacteria and fungi.
As surprising as it sounds, the FDA does not regulate the “shelf life” of cosmetics. Skincare and SPF are another story. Many ingredients are considered a “drug”, that are regulated by the FDA, and an expiration date should be printed on the bottle of your skincare.
So, how do we know when to toss out beauty products then? Here’s the guidelines I use for myself.
Lipstick: 1 – 2 years (depending on lipstick or gloss)
Foundation: 6 months for liquids, 2 years for powders
Mascara: 3 months
Skincare: Check printed expiration date
SPF: 6 months – 1 year
Nail Polish: 1 – 2 years
Cheers to a beautiful and healthy new makeup year!
