Customized tutoring with Mathnasium

0

My 12 year old has been struggling with math since the 4th grade.  He is now in 7th grade and helping him figure out the way he learns has been quite the process!

In December we started a two-month experience with our partners, Mathnasium.  From the beginning, Karen Jackson, owner of the Queen Creek location was nothing short of awesome.

Our Experience

Riley’s experience started off with a customized assessment to determine his skill level and where his gaps in learning were.  From there, Mathnasium was able to create a learning plan tailored to his needs.  His time spent at Mathnasium wasn’t just help with homework, like other tutors we’ve used, but based off of what he really needed help with.  After his assessment, Karen let me know how Riley did and we ultimately found out that first of all, Riley needed help with his basic math skills but also that he was in the wrong math level at school (too advanced).

How They Helped

Once we determined the proper math level for Riley, we made the necessary adjustments at school with included dropping him down to grade-level math after winter break.  He still had 3 weeks in the quarter to go, so the tutors at Mathnasium kept assisting him at his current assessment level.  We saw an almost immediate change in his skills but also his attitude about math.  He went from being the “I don’t know how to do this stuff.” kid to calling me from school one day to tell me that he got an A in his math class.  Mathnasium helped him gain his confidence to not only ask for help but also that he can challenge himself!

About Mathnasium

The Mathnasium Method™, implemented at more than 700 Mathnasium centers in the U.S. and abroad, is a unique program that provides each child with a customized learning plan and personalized instruction in a way that makes sense to them. Our students receive the fundamental practice they need to master number facts, build computational skills, and improve number sense.

The goal is simple: to teach math in a way that makes sense to kids. Mathnasium centers across the country have helped struggling students develop into ‘A’ students and ‘A’ students go on to even greater achievements.

The Mathnasium experience begins with an assessment designed to pinpoint a child’s strengths and weaknesses. These results provide the foundation for each student’s customized learning plan. Students learn math in a friendly, productive learning environment and are taught by caring and knowledgeable instructors well-versed in integrating Mathnasium’s techniques with the math curriculum used in Phoenix-area schools. The Mathnasium Method™ uses a unique combination of mental, verbal, visual, tactile, and written techniques to help children really understand math and has been developed over more than 40 years of practical experience with thousands of students.

I’m happy to say that Riley is now an “A” student in math.  This was in part for us moving him to the correct math class for him but largely in part for the tutors at Mathnasium and their method of tutoring.  If your child is struggling in math, do yourself a favor and take them to your local Mathnasium center for an assessment!
