I’ve Been About Self Care

Somewhere between the grind of day to day routines, morning cuddles, making lunches, prepping dinner, and daily tasks I get my 15-30 minutes daily of Self-care. Self-care is important as a mom. It’s not selfish taking time to replenish yourself so you can fully function; this will directly impact how you are able to interact with others. Motherhood is often accompanied with talks about the positive or the ugly but what about the daily things we do for our sanity.

Words cannot espresso how much self-care I needed today: baby pooped out of her diaper = extra bath, the dog vomited all over the carpet, no milk in the house, explosion of laundry seeping out of the laundry room, and the dogs haven’t been walked. I have yet to shower myself, or had any sort of time alone. I felt like a failure and that I hadn’t checked anything off of my to do list. However, we all know that being a mother is more than living off a check list.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that I took 30 minutes to sit down with a nice cup of coffee and my bullet journal at 8pm. Yes, I drank coffee at 8pm! But those 30 minutes gave me a latte time to decompress and reset for tomorrow.

So I want to challenge everyone who reads this to be deliberate and diligent and take some time for you for the betterment of your mind, body and soul. Take time to refresh and recharge because in order to be a great mom, partner, and friend you must feel good about yourself.  Incorporate a self-care ritual into your daily life because we deserve it.

Here are some ideas that I rotate into my self-care journey:

Coffee
Bath (accompanied by wine)
Pedicure
Journaling
Online shopping
Eating a treat
Walking
Personal hygiene (rather that be shaving your legs or something else)
Netflix
Reading
Acknowledging feelings
Phone a mom friend
Cuddling with a pet
Meditate (use wine if necessary)
Exercise (Dancing in your living room. In my head I can twerk like a 20yr old on spring break.)

  1. Well said. We seem to forget ourselves through the chaotic days. My pleasure is getting with friends. Which first you must escape the full household paparazzi asking where you’re going. But it’s all worth it. Great read.

    • Love the household paparazzi comment! That was a full visual :). I feel like I have to escape the toddler full nelson. I think Self-Care was something my Mom never talked to me about and something that you learn is ok to do and now its more excepted and common language.
