International Beer Day! Choose Your Beer Based on the Wine You Like!

0

Today is International Beer Day and I totally love that it happens to be just after school is back in session! Ok, so I know stereotypically moms like wine. At least that’s what all those memes on Facebook and Pinterest want us to believe. But, here’s the thing: Moms like beer too. And historically, women have been the ones brewing beer, for like thousands of years. (If you want to read a really cool historical account of women in brewing, check this out.) Plus, beer is made with hops and hops are green, so really, its like drinking a salad… At least that’s what I tell myself.

If you aren’t into beer, I’d like to argue that its because you haven’t found the right one yet. Most Americans are familiar with the ones advertised during Super Bowl, but there’s a whole world of beers out there, many of which are brewed in small batches with unique flavors, just waiting for someone to discover them. Let me introduce you to a few (by comparing to wine types) so you can find just the right brew to celebrate Beer Day!

For those who like white wines, like Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, try a Pilsner, a wheat Ale or a craft style Lager (I really like Huss Brewing’s Lager and they’re Phoenix locals)

If you prefer a medium wines, like a Merlot or Zin, you might like an IPA (with or without extra hops), a Bock or a Pale Ale (Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale is the best gateway beer in my opinion)

Or if you drink full bodied wines, like Cabernet or Chardonnay, you’ll enjoy a heavy bodied beer like a Stout, Barleywine or Porter (AZ Wilderness does a seasonal Chocolate Bunny Porter that’s too die for!).

Of course, you also have the option of something light, fruity or bubbly like a Champagne, but in beer form. Go for a Belgian Dubbel or Trippel, or a Sour Gose if you like tartness (Highly recommend 12 West Brewing in Gilbert’s Peach Gose).

The best way to find your favorite is to taste all of them! Grab a group of friends, head to Total Wine and have a tasting party at home or take the family/spouse to a local brewery (Check out my list of Family Friendly Breweries here). Pick a few styles, a few brands and keep track of ones you like and ones you don’t. I can guarantee that sooner or later, you’ll find something you really like. And you’ll never drink those Super Bowl advertised beers again. Happy International Beer Day! Cheers!
