I’m not ashamed.
I know I am not cool. I think cool left my body while birthing my 2nd kid in under 2 years. Being a mom is amazing, fulfilling, exciting and at the same time crappy, draining, and frankly uncool. So why would I care that my minivan is not “cool”. Why on God’s green Earth, would I be ashamed of the ONE material item in my life that is consistently a life raft in my storm.
Yeah my Odyssey may be 11 almost 12 years old and definitely has an infinite amount of miscellaneous crap in the back, but it’s still beautiful to me. She is a respectable silver with power doors that open with a push of the button. I know my SUV toting moms can’t do that, and definitely have to worry about their precious cargo dinging the car next to them.
This car was engineered to be my saving grace, my beacon of hope, an oasis from the craziness of my 4 children. It has the DVD player to entertain them incessantly. It has the Eco Boost so that I only have to stop at the Costco gas station just once every week or so. My kids are so far away from me in the back, that sometimes, I CAN’T EVEN HEAR THEM. When I have to wrangle my sweet, angelic, two year old who has turned into a rabid dog into a car seat, I can stand in my car to buckle her in. If I really wanted to, I could dance in my minivan, and my kids often do. I am not sure how two rear-facing car seats fit into an SUV.
I am not sure why there is so much hate for my beloved Minivan. I suppose because we associate them with our own “uncool” mothers and we could NEVER be like them. But my friends, here is the sad truth: We’re 30-something, we go to soccer games, we go through the drive thru WAY too often, we’re definitely our mothers. Hiding behind the “coolness” of a Ford Escape is not going to help you. I’m not saying you have to love the minivan, heck you don’t even have to drive it. Just appreciate it. It’s SO convenient, and so practical, and honestly so luxurious, for the same price as your SUV.
