How My Hair Changed Everything

Guess what?

You are amazing. You are important. You can do anything. You can be a magical glittery unicorn.

I have always been a people pleaser. I don’t know if it’s because I’m the firstborn child, a woman, or just my personality but I always have been. I don’t like contention or to make anyone feel bad with anything I’m doing/saying/making/etc. It’s my inclination/nature to put others and their supposed feelings ahead of my real ones. How my hair changed everything | east valley moms blog

Last year I did something I’ve always wanted to do: dyed my hair teal. It was one of the scariest things I’ve done. Why was I scared you ask? Answer: I didn’t want to be judged based on my outward appearance alone. I’m very conservative normally but I have always loved the idea of unicorn hair. I just didn’t think I could pull it off and I was very much self conscious. Dying hair sometimes seems like an act of rebellion or irresponsible so I never did it because I didn’t want to be automatically categorized as “that mom”.

I was visiting my friend in San Francisco last summer and we just decided on a whim to dye my hair teal ourselves. I swallowed my fears and we just did it. We actually didn’t do too horribly! Once I was home I found a local stylist that helped me correct the color to be just right and I’ve never looked back.

I felt a surge of confidence after dying my hair. Silly though it may sound, truly, it gave me confidence to be more bold, try new things, and to be whomever I wanted to be. After about 6 months of the teal I asked for purple to be added because I thought it would be so cool. Kind of like a galaxy. more unicorn look, and it totally is! I love my hair. My daughters love my hair, they call me their unicorn mom. My hair color has also helped me to show my daughters that how a person looks isn’t the only thing that matters, it’s how they act that matters.

It’s never too late to figure out what makes you happy and to do it! Don’t fret about what others might think. There have been some people that do think my hair automatically makes me an irresponsible mother, teacher, part of the community but I do not let that get me down. Coloring my hair make me happy, confident, brave, bold and those are all good qualities to show and teach my daughters.

Find your something that makes you brave and bold. And freaking do it!

  1. You are a brave person Ali. The one thing I have noticed with you in the last year is the number if people who love you no matter what color your color is. You obviously have touched people because if your heart and because you are so open. You certainly have let your life do shine! You are a ministering angel to many. Love Barb
