Habits of Healthy, Happy Moms

Let’s face it, we all know that “mom life” can be overwhelming on a daily basis.  We want to lead by example and be a good role model so we to do our best but it’s definitely challenging.  So how does one stay upbeat and not lose it when things are feeling a bit insane?   It starts with building habits that will help us long term.  Here are a few that I find extremely helpful.

First off, learn to let it go or brush it off!  I have a tendency to think things need to be done a certain way or need to be close to perfect.  Once I learned to let that kind of thinking go, it was a weight lifted off of my shoulders.  It makes you feel more free when you aren’t constantly fixing and striving for perfection.  Let the kids be kids and roll with it.  Your toddler is throwing a fit because you picked out the wrong shirt for them, your child says the food you cooked is gross, whatever it might be, take a deep breath and move on.

Know when to ask for help.  Having an “I can do it all” mentality will leave you feeling overwhelmed and you will be burnt out day after day.  Don’t be afraid to make a list of your daily tasks and decide which ones can wait for another day or can possibly be done by someone else.  Sometimes just asking a friend to watch your kids for an hour so that you can run to the grocery store or a doctors appointment by yourself can help save your sanity for the day.

Remember to take care of yourself.  In order to care for your little ones you have to take care of yourself first.  Eating a healthy and balanced diet is key to feeling energetic enough to keep up with your busy schedule.  Along with healthy eating, try to work in 30 minutes each day for exercise.  If you’re short on time, try some workouts at home or activities with your kids that will get you moving as well.  Most importantly, get a good nights rest.  Your body needs rest in order to repair and restore itself.  Aim for 7-9 hours each night.
