Mama, You’re Doing Great!

I think it’s safe to say the last few months have certainly been a whirlwind. Routines have gone out the window and we’re all doing whatever we need to do to get through the days while trying to keep some kind of normalcy. Then you see or hear of other moms who just seem like they have it all down, that they are still in control. And are happy. And confident. Then your own self-doubt and stress come piling in!

I don’t know who else needs to hear this but here are a few notes that I know I need to be reminded of once in awhile:

  1. Girl, put the phone down. Google is helpful at times but don’t forget to trust your instincts. You know your child better than anyone else.
  2. That goes for social media too. Just because another mama shared that she potty-trained her kid in 3 days and you and your kid have been working at it for months does NOT make you incompetent and you shouldn’t feel bad about it.
  3. Parental Guidance books. I’ve realized to take each chapter with a grain of salt. Yes, some parents may swear by these books and how it helped their kid, but kids are not cookie-cutter (obviously) so these ‘How-To’ books should act as reference tools, not the be all-end all.
  4. Had a rough day with your kiddos? We’ve all been there.  It doesn’t help to stress over it too long. Talk to your child, say you’re sorry if you overreacted when he spilled milk on your work notes and move on. You are not a bad mom!
  5. Give Amazon (or Target) and your wallet a break! If you’re like me, I am constantly on Amazon looking for toys and activities to keep my son busy. I’ll see what other moms are doing with their kids and instantly try to buy something similar for mine. Ironically 9/10 times he’ll get bored after 5 min of the new toy or activity I invested in and will play with a toy he’s had for a year! There goes another wasted expense. Sure, new things once in awhile are good but no need to buy new things every week. Our little humans are simple. They’ll make do with anything you already have in the house and you can find ways to make it educational!

I guess what I’m trying to say to you (or more so myself) is that motherhood is complicated but it doesn’t have to be MORE complicated by adding unnecessary stresses and pressures to yourself. You are not a perfect mom; no one is.. but you are doing a GREAT job. Stop comparing yourself. You’re doing your best to keep you and your little ones healthy and happy within your capabilities. Forget the outside pressures and just focus on the quality time you can have with your little right now because in a blink of an eye, they won’t be little anymore.
