Hello, I am so excited to be writing about my favorite topic – fashion. Since most of us have been consumed with back to school, I thought it would be fun to write about how girls of different ages approach fashion for back to school.
Meet Tiana. She is ready to start her sophomore year of college at Cornell, her family lives in Ahwatukee. When Tiana makes decisions about what clothing to purchase for school she looks for items that can be worn many different ways. People watching is her primary inspiration for what she decides to wear each day. Her top 5 must-haves for her back to school wardrobe are: 1. statement jewelry 2. dresses for many types of events (she’s in a sorority and has many functions) 3. a good pair of jeans 4. a perfect day dress that is versatile 5. a cute blouse to go with her jeans.
Amanda is going to be a senior in high school this year. She’s my daughter and attends a parochial school so she enjoys choosing what she will wear after school. Amanda values comfort the most in addition to being unique. She is inspired by magazines and celebrity fashion in her choices for what to wear. Her top 5 must-haves for back to school are: 1. cobalt blue shorts (cobalt is a big color for fall) 2. a black maxi skirt 3. a gray tshirt 4. a print tank 5. a denim vest to layer with everything.
Back to school fashion for me is truly about my kids and what they would like to wear, but I am ‘clothes minded’ and like to look fun and fashionable. It’s hot, and comfort is key, which is why I chose this sleeveless denim shirt worn as a jacket, a pop of color neon tank from my store, and a gray pencil skirt. My favorite piece is my silver BCBG oxford shoes! I hope you all have a fashionable school year!
Choosing clothing that will look good and perform well in the heat of Arizona can be a challenge. If you want an item that will breathe well as well as being able to absorb sweat, natural fiber fabrics are the best option – linen and cotton. All cottons are not the same, there are many different weaves of cotton and if woven tightly, it may not feel cool at all. Therefore, a pima or supima cotton is the better choice for feeling cooler.
Gauze is also a good choice. Silk is a cool fabric but due to its delicate nature and care requirements, it isn’t always the most practical choice. Polyester and rayon are synthetic fabrics and lack the breathability of natural fiber fabrics, but are usually less expensive. Modal is a semi-synthetic fabric that may actually be more absorbent than cotton, but may have a tendency to stretch and pill. Lyocell and bamboo are newer semi-synthetic fibers that react much like modal in their ability to breath and keep the wearer comfortable in high temperatures. Other advantages of modal, lyocell and bamboo is they are absorbent and less likely to wrinkle or shrink when washed. However, they can be more difficult to find in apparel.
No matter the age, trying to look good in a hot climate can be difficult. I hope this fabric information is helpful when selecting what you will wear!
