A Few Safety Pointers.

June is National Safety month and I could not end this month without reviewing some of my favorite safety tips that my family and I follow.

#1. Always wear sunscreen. Do you remember Baz Lurhman’s song about always wearing sunscreen? It’s true we should always wear it! Even people like myself who has darker skin needs to wear sunscreen. The sun is hot, the rays it omits can damage your skin and even cause cancer. Who wants wrinkles, dry damage skin or cancer? Not me, so you can bet I am slathering on sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every two hours if I’m out swimming, or sweating and every four if I’m out by the sun. I honestly don’t think any sunscreen last longer than four hours. Still confused? Click here for more info.

#2. Just like sunscreen a good pair of sunglasses is a must specially hear in Arizona. Did you know that you don’t need to spend a ton of money to get the protection our eyes need or just because it caused a pretty penny it doesn’t automatically mean it’s protecting our gorgeous eyes from those harmful rays. Make sure the ones you own or buy says 100% UVA and 100% UVB protection or 400 UV protection. These glasses will protect your eyes from the UV rays that can cause cataract and even sunburn to your eyes. Think wrap around or big sense glasses. The wider the protection the better. Just wear your sunglasses even on a not so sunny day! Need more pointers on what makes for a good sunglasses? Click here.

#3. Dress appropriately for what you are doing. Hiking in the dessert? Shoes, lightweight shirt, hat and short might just do the trick. Going to the lake? beach? Might want to consider a cover-up over your bathing suit that can take you from the lake to the store in under 2 minutes. Flip flops might be a good idea but I like water shoes for the these activities since it provides better protection for our feet.  Going somewhere cooler? Consider layering your clothes especially if you are going from cooler temp to warm temp within the same day.  I personally love pareo (beach wrap) for beach/pool days. It’s light weight, easy to put on and take off and comes in a variety of colors.

#4. Stay hydrated. Drink lots and lots of water. Our body is about 60% water and therefore any water we might loose through sweating and or peeing need to be replaced. Water regulates a lot of our body functions and stay balance. Water help our body temperature stay within a cool range and drinking water can even help us lose weight. Drinking water is good for you and should never be forgotten. Drink  your water and keep your body happy!

#5. Don’t text and drive. Resist the urge to check your text message, email, Facebook or instagram when driving. I’m guilty for doing this but after realizing that my life and the lives that is in the car with me is more important than a text I have no problem putting my phone in the glovebox as soon as I get in the car. Sometimes I just turn the ringer on silent so I am not reminded of any updates. Read Erica’s funny take on being a crotch watcher here.

#6. Wear your seatbelt and keep those kiddos in the right kind of carseat. Usually the height requirement trumps the age and weight of a passenger. Yes, you are important, so are the rest of the people in the car. Better safe than sorry right?

#6. Always pack a snack. Avoid HANGRY children and or mommies by packing a snack. No one wants to deal with cranky, angry and hungry anything so be on the safe side and pack a snack.

#7. Going somewhere? Always let someone you trust know where, when and how long you will be gone. Whenever we leave our home for a trip we ask a the friend that lives close by to swing by our house atleast once or twice to just make sure it’s still there, the house that is. When we go camping or hiking we let two people know exactly where we plan to go and when we should be back because if and when we don’t check back in with them after such trips I can really on them to go look for us if need be. 🙂

#8. Always have a responsible adult to watch the kids around water and Don’t try to save someone that is drowning if you can’t swim yourself! That last smidge of info is for me because I can’t swim. Don’t worry I will always be with a back up plan 🙂

These are just a FEW safety pointers I follow with my family. Do you have some that you always to be safe? Would love to hear from you! Comment below! Hope you make it a great day and Guess what? It’s Friday, have a wonderful weekend.

XOXO, Roe
