Ways to Catch and Keep Mom Friends | East Valley Moms Blog

Mom Friends

Yes, I long for Mom friends! Moms who are in the trenches, whose everyday lives are full of baby talk, sign language, laundry, Sesame Street, cleaning, cooking, hugs, bath times, routines, and coffee. I am a transplant from the Pacific North West to our sun shining, blooming cactus state of Arizona. The move forced me to leave behind my social connections, family, networks, and knowledge of community behind.
So, if you are someone like me who enjoys human connection, laughing, bouncing parenting ideas off someone, having mom friends to do activities with then try some of these steps because I can guarantee that one of them will work for you:

10 ways to catch and keep building mom friends

1.  Apps
Pick up your phone and browse some great apps meant to connect moms. I am currently crushing on Peanut App as it’s like a dating app for moms. You upload a couple pictures, answer some quick questions, and boom! You’re set off making play dates with a simple swipe.
2. Online
Several years ago I joined Meetup.com. I joined a happy hour group. Fun fact: I met my best friend at this group seven years ago when she moved from California and was struggling to find connections and friendships. It has thousands of group’s stroller groups, mom groups, family groups, hiking groups; you can even start your own group.
3. Libraries
In order to catch a mom friend find the children section and plan on being they’re for a while. Go a couple different times and check out different events. Eventually you will find that Mom who continues to go at the same times you are. Walk up introduce yourself and BAM! Instant mom friend.
4. Farmers markets
They are outdoors so mothers can allow their children to roam and get their energy out while interacting with local vendors, shopping for unique gifts and local food items. I frequent the Gilbert farmers markets often. They have a food court section where moms can sit and watch children play. My Lena started playing with Lilly and those two kiddos helped create Mom friends.
5. The Gym
First off, only join a gym with childcare. Because it will just make life easier. Once at the gym notice the other woman around you who drop off kids or go to the same Zumba class as you. Introduce yourself. You won’t just be making fitness gains you will be gaining friends too.
6. Eventbrite
Find an event that’s something you enjoy and geared towards mom’s, parenting, or the kiddos, and go to it. Guaranteed there is someone else there just like you craving for someone to interact and bond with.
7. Coffee Shops
Coffee: the fuel of motherhood. Frequent coffee shops! My personal favorite is Bergies. Bring the kids and have activities to keep them busy for 15-30 mins. Approach a mom with a similar age kiddo and invite them to join in on the activity. Next thing you know your sipping coffee with your future bestie.
8. City Recreation Guide
Each city has a rec guide online with events or parent tot classes. Pick one of the events and go to it. At these events expect to see other mom’s with their children. Be brave, approach someone and introduce yourself.
9. The park
Easy one. The park is a sanctuary where mothers can take children to get their energy out and there is no noise level restraint. Help your child interact with other children and thus you can interact with other moms at the park.
10. Target
If you need me…I’m at Target. The one stop shop for all things moms ever need. This place is a mom magnet. Mom’s come here with or without their kids. Find a mom in the diaper aisle and spark up a conversation about any given topic. My personal favorite at the moment is potty training.

    • Perfect. Yes moving and being new to a city makes it hard. I think it gets even harder as we get older and have kids. We all live busy lives so the app makes it a little easier.

    • It’s a simple no pressure way to start building a mom tribe lol! I also have tried the MUSH app but I like peanut app better. Hope you enjoy it.
