5 Tips for Moms to Stay Hydrated This Summer

Yeah, we’re pushing water for our kids all the time in the summer, but it’s easy to forget ourselves to drink water.

Living in Arizona can be pretty brutal in the summer  Even if you spend the whole day in the pool, it’s still easy to become dehydrated and overheat.

Two years ago, my cousin moved to Las Vegas and completely underestimated her water needs in the desert. She ended up passing out at working and spending that day in the hospital severely dehydrated.

She said it was one of the worst feelings and she never wants to go through that again.  So now, she drinks tons of water.

One of my goals for the New Year was to drink 100 oz of water daily!  That’s a lot!  Here are some tips I have found to make drinking water easier.

1) Keep track of how much water you are drinking.  I bought a pitcher from the dollar store that I fill up each night and I refill my water from that during the day.  It’s an easy way to see if you are drinking enough.

2) Flavor your water.  Add lemons, berries, mint leaves whatever you like!  Pinterest has so many recipes for infused water you’re bound to find one that sounds yummy!  The water enhancers like Crystal Light and Dansani are my husband’s favorites.  Getting him to drink water is like pulling teeth!

3) Use cups with lids and straws.  I don’t know what it is but everyone I have talked to says they tend to drink more when their cup has a straw!  I love the ones from the dollar store because if I lose them or drop them I don’t feel bad replacing it.  Plus they are super cute!  It’s also an easy way to make sure you always have a water with you when you are on the go.

4) Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning.  Even before I have my coffee, I drink a glass of water.  It helps to wake up your metabolism too which is never a bad thing!

5) Drink a glass of water when you start to feel tired mid-day.  A lot of the times as moms, we get so caught up with our responsibilities that we forget to take care of ourselves.  Most of the time, that mid-day crash is just mild dehydration.  Drink a couple glasses of water before reaching for the Redbull.

The rule of thumb is to drink eight 8 oz glasses of water a day.  In Arizona, we need a little more than that.  Another better way to determine your water needs is to take your weight and divide it in half and drink that many ounces a day.  Hoping you all have a safe a healthy summer and don’t let the heat bring you down!
