Simple Sewing With Kids: Doll Pillows

1

If you have kids that love to play with dolls, some scrap fabric pieces and about 5 minutes, you can create these easy sewn doll pillows! My daughters have a variety of dolls including beanie babies, a few barbies, princess dolls, ponies, etc. At some point, all of these “friends” take a nap in their makeshift beds she makes for them.

Recently, she asked me to help her make some pillows for her dolls, and it was the perfect way to teach her some beginning sewing skills and use up some scrap fabric we had. This is also a chance to re-purpose some of those clothes/blankets they used as babies but won’t need anymore. Any fabric could be made into a pillow!

What you need:

Template (we used note cards for tracing because they seemed like the perfect size)

Pen/sharpie

fabric

Scissors/Rotary blade

Sewing machine with thread

Poly-fil/stuffing

Fold your fabric piece in half so that there are 2 layers.

Lay your template down and trace your rectangle.

Cut your rectangles out and lay the front sides (with pattern) together.

Sew 3 of the sides, leaving one open. Turn your pillow right-side-out, and then fill your pillow with your stuffing.

Fold the last edge in and sew.

This project is definitely something your child can help with and since it is so simple, it only took us about 5 minutes per pillow! Sewing straight lines like these are a perfect beginners project for someone wanting to learn to sew. There are more advanced ways to close the edge of a pillow if you don’t want the seam to show, but kids will be perfectly satisifed and proud of themselves no matter the imperfections. Our dolls sure had a fun slumber party together!
