Self-Love September sponsored by Luxe Salon & Spa: Being a Good Role Model

What does being a good role model have to do with self-love?  Everything!  It starts with YOU.  By loving yourself, you teach your children the importance of self-worth which is the first step to living a happy and successful life.

sls-kariLet’s take a look at healthy living first.  This one is important because your health plays a big part in your life in how you feel and how much energy you have to do your day to day tasks.  Children often mimic what their parents do especially when it comes to what they eat.  Incorporating healthy foods into your daily diet shows our kids how they should be eating as well.  Regular exercise is also key.  Our children are more apt to be active if you’re doing things such as going for bike rides, joining a gym where they have activities for kids, going on a family hike or whatever excites you.  Find things you can do on your own and also as a family.  Eating healthy foods and exercising regularly will give your kids the building blocks to live a healthy lifestyle and set themselves up for success.

Next we have to address self-image.  I think we as moms, I know I am guilty of it, are too hard on ourselves about our bodies.  We have birthed children for crying out loud, give yourself some love!  It seems so easy to point out the negative things and focus on those.  The danger in this is that our kids pick up on this very quickly.  If we are constantly putting ourselves down, our kids will start to do the same.  Instead, focus on your great features.  One big thing you can do is accept compliments.  When someone says “you look beautiful”, “I love your outfit” or “you have a great smile”, embrace it and say thank you.  Be proud of who you are and your children will feel that.

A great gift you can teach your kids is the importance of generosity and volunteering.  I feel that when you give a helping hand it makes your heart grow.  There is something so rewarding about being able to help another person.  Have your kids pick 10 toys that they no longer use or have them help go through their closet and donate clothes that are no longer being used.  Volunteer at a food bank or a church event.  The opportunities are endless and your children will look up to you for being so generous with your time.

Be honest and open with your kids and in turn you will teach them to be more truthful and confident about their own mistakes and victories.  Share your life experiences, good and bad, as you feel it’s appropriate.  They will learn so much about you and value your input in their own lives.

Remember to take some time to give yourself some self-love this month and always.  Check out the September Self-Love task list here.  Which ones will you do?  Let me know in the comments below or reach out to me on Facebook or Instagram!
