The Grass Isn’t Always Greener

“We pine for what we don’t have, but don’t nourish what we already have”

I’m sure many of us, if not all have experienced at one time or another the want, lust, wishing, day dreaming of something more, more happiness. Thinking that once this happens I’ll be happy, once I loose this, or go here I’ll be happier. Thinking the grass is greener on the other side and that we can’t be happy or enjoy where we are until a list is complete or a goal is accomplished, or and event happens.

I don’t write this because I have the secret key or experience to give all the answers and step by step guide to how to be happy. Yet I write this in sharing that we all do it. We’ve all been there. We all drift and can let life put our happiness on hold. You can easily get caught up in the trap of social media. Looking through Instagram and thinking why does their life look so easy, their kids so well behaved, she has such a cute home or wardrobe. No one wants to be the “Debbie Downer” and only post the negative and the bad, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. We look at others highlight reel and only see the “bad” in our own lives.

I’ve made it a goal to be happy in the now! Well lets say at least work towards that.

It may sound silly that it takes some hard work to shift your mind set to be happy with what you have, but it does. In a world where everything is out in the open and shared, its easy to get distracted.

In the new year I made a resolution to not only read more, but read more personal development.  While I’m still off to a slow start I have enjoyed Present Over Perfect. It can be applied to really anyone, but especially to us mothers. Learning to just be in the moments and appreciate the small things. Events and activities don’t need to be big and grand or even perfect. Our weekends and breaks don’t need to be slam packed with activities for our kids. Slow down, enjoy, be present.

I’ve also found writing down daily gratitudes to be helpful. In all the hustle and bustle of the day or week its easy to look back and forget the really good, little things. So at the end of the day or as they happen, write a few things that made you happy or that you were grateful for that day. When you feel the creep up of those insecurities look back at all the good you wrote down.

The one thing that has worked well for me and has taken me a long while to learn is the grass REALLY isn’t greener on the other side. Its easy to see a snip it of someone else life and say I wish that was the case for me. But I’ve found if you truly look and see, theres probably a handful of things you wouldn’t want that go along with that one good thing.

Like anything else it takes time and hard work to get there. Things don’t just happen over night and need to constantly be nourished and worked on. It takes a conscious daily effort to choose to be happy in the now, but life is way too short to put living it on hold. Surround yourself with like minded people, drown out the negative, invest in YOUR happy.
