Fall Family Movie Guide 2016

It’s Fall y’all!  If you’re a movie buff, then you know this time of year is a movie lovers dream!  Fall is when the studios release the big guns – the awards season contenders, the family holiday movies, and the action flicks which have a little more meat to them than the traditional summer fare.   There are several good choices this year and I know I can’t wait to see a lot of these!

Fall Family Movie Guide 2016

For the Whole Family

  1. Queen of Katwe – (Opens September 23rd) Starring Lupita Nyong’o this is the story of how a young girl from Uganda becomes a world-class chess player.
  2. Storks – (Opens September 23rd) Storks are changing with the times, and they’re getting out of the baby delivery business and moving into the package delivery business. But when a baby shows up for delivery, a stork named Junior breaks all the rules to get the baby to its rightful owners.
  3. The Eagle Huntress – (Opening October 28th) This documentary follows the life of a 13-year-old Mongolian girl as she becomes the first female to hunt with a Golden Eagle, a tradition that is typically passed down from father to son. She is the first female to hunt in this fashion in the 2,000-year history of the tradition.  Talk about shattering a glass ceiling…
  4. Trolls (Opening November 4th) Your kids already want to see this one and so do you because it stars Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick as trolls who set out on an adventure beyond the only world they have ever known.
  5. Moana (Opens November 23rd) Disney’s CG animated feature about an adventurous teenager named Moana stars Dwayne Johnson as demigod Maui who sails across the sea with Moana on a quest to save her people.
  6. Sing (Opening December 21st) This movie comes from the producers of Despicable Me. It’s the story of a Koala named Buster who runs a down and out theatre, which used to be the place to be.  Wanting to restore the theatre to it’s former grandness, Buster devises a plan for the world’s greatest singing competition.  

For Mature Tweens and Teens

  1. Deepwater Horizon – (Opens September 30th) This film stars Mark Wahlberg and Kate Hudson.  It’s the story of the oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico which lead to the world’s worst man-made disaster in history.
  2. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children – (Opens September 30th) This film, directed by Tim Burton is based on the beloved book series for teens. Gothic in nature, this creepy story focuses on a home for children with special powers.
  3. Keeping up with the Joneses – (Opens October 21st) Starring Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher as a typical suburban couple trying to keep up with their next-door neighbors, who turn out to be spies. No big deal.
  4. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them(Opens November 18th) This highly anticipated film from the wizarding world of Harry Potter stars Eddie Redmayne as a magizoologist who stops in New York City for a quick visit in 1926. His visit is interrupted by a series of events including the escape of some fantastic beasts.
  5. La La Land(Opening December 2nd) Starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, this musical follows Sebastian and Mia as they chase stardom in Los Angeles; he as a jazz pianist and she an actress. But their desire to succeed, which brought them together, may also tear them apart.
  6. A Monster Calls – (Opening December 23rd) Based on the book by Patrick Ness, this film centers on a young boy trying to deal with his single mother’s terminal illness by creating a fantasy world of fairy tales and monsters.
