Choosing your child’s first (or next) school is a huge decision.

Some of us get lucky. We stumble into schools that end up being a perfectly fine fit for our own kiddos by following the lead of friends and family members whose kids are a bit older. Referrals are definitely a great place to start when you’re looking for that first elementary school – or middle school, or high school.

But sometimes what works for someone else’s child doesn’t work for yours. Maybe you have a kid who is off-the-charts smart and needs a fast-paced and constantly challenging learning environment. Maybe you have a creative kid who is drawn to artistic pursuits. Maybe your child thrives in a big, bustling social environment – or prefers a quieter, purposeful pace.

Or maybe you just want to know for yourself what else is out there. In Arizona, it’s a lot!

Arizona is an open-enrollment state, which means your child can attend any school in any public school district in the Valley (subject to available space). Then there are hundreds of charter schools (which are also tuition-free public schools) and hundreds more private schools. Where do you start?

That’s why Raising Arizona Kids magazine created Education Fair AZ, the Valley’s first large-scale school-choice event. It’s your chance to meet with representatives from up to 100 local schools, school districts and education-resource organizations.

You’ll also learn about non-traditional education choices, like online schools, and discover tutoring resources that support or enrich learning. And you’ll receive a complimentary copy of “Schools, etc.”, the magazine’s comprehensive annual education guide, listing details about every school and school district in Maricopa County.

At EdFairAZ, local education experts will talk about topics including:

  • What you need to know (about your own kids and families) before choosing schools
  • How to recognize a high-quality learning environment
  • Where to find financial support for private-school tuition
  • What the classrooms of today are doing to prepare kids for the life in the 21st century

We’ve partnered with some big names in the field of education to present this free event for families. EdFairAZ is sponsored by Choose A School, Legacy Traditional Schools, Arizona Private Education Scholarship Fund, Imagine Schools, Rancho Solano Preparatory School, New Way Academy, Hope Online High School and Expect More Arizona.

Join us anytime from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 in the West Building (lower level, room 2) at Phoenix Convention Center, 100 N. Third St. Admission is free but be prepared to pay for parking.

Bring the kids! And while you’re downtown, stick around for the Herberger Festival of the Arts, Local First Fall Festival and all sorts of other fun events going on nearby the same day.
