It’s the busiest time of the year and worrying about what to wear should be the least of your worries. We all want to look stylish and put together, but as busy moms we don’t always have the time for ourselves and we tend to be last on our list. Today I am going to teach you how to build a capsule wardrobe that will get you through this busy holiday season. Put the work in now and you’ll be able to create outfits quickly when you are rushing out the door.

Discover Your Style

The first thing you need to do is identify your style. My favorite tool for this is Pinterest!!!! They have made it so easy to create a vision board for the wardrobe of your dreams. I have several fashion boards you can use for inspiration on Pinterest. Create a board called Style Inspirations. Add pins to this board of any clothing item or outfit you like. If you already have a board for fashion, still make a new one. Add only the things you absolutely love to this new board.

Anything on Repeat?

Once you have 30-50 pins, go through them and write down colors, styles, combinations or themes you observe . For me, I noticed jeans, white blouses, converse, wrap blouses, dresses and blazers were on repeat. The colors I gravitated towards were mainly neutrals. I liked a lot of black & white, grays with pops of pink and greens. I also gravitated toward stripes, leopard and florals.

Perfect Lifestyle Pieces

Think about all the things you need to dress for in your life. I wrote down: networking events, working with cients, playdates, date nights and casual events. Look at the pieces you wrote down earlier from your Pinterest board and circle the pieces that will fit into your lifestyle. On my vision board I had a ton of blazers & black jeans.

Finding the Right Combo’s

Go back to your vision board and see what style combo’s are there. Do you see a lot of pants & tops, dresses, skirt & blouse? What do you gravitate toward? I gravitate toward outfits that use pants. I don’t often wear dresses but I had a lot on my vision board. When deciding on what outfits remember to keep in mind what you feel most comfortable in and what looks good on your body type. Just because it’s pretty doesn’t mean it’s practical.

Closet Audit

In order to add new pieces you must get rid of the old. This is one of my favorite things I do with my clients. Unleash yourself from all the things that don’t work for you! Go through your closet and pull out what you have that matches the style you have discovered for yourself and the pieces that you feel best in. Get rid of the rest! Once you know what you have start a list of the pieces you need to add to get your ideal wardrobe. I had a lot of jeans and blouses but only one blazer. Blazer’s were on my list as well as leopard & florals.

Work With What You Have

Pull up your Pinterest inspiration board and use that as a guide to build outfits. Start pairing items you have together and snap a quick picture of it on your phone. Get creative with it and try pairing pieces you have never worn together and see if they look good. For example, I have this awesome leather skirt and usually wear it with dressier items but it was laying next to my flannel shirt on the bed….well I paired them together with a little bootie. Instant outfit with I already owned.

Add New Pieces

Now that you have a bunch of outfits from your current wardrobe, you really know what you need to ad. Make a note in your phone and type in all the pieces you would like to add. Next time you head out to shop keep your list in mind and pick up the most important pieces first.
